Sometimes We Limp

This week has been one of those incredibly grueling kind of weeks, one that takes all of your energy and skill to just survive in the navigation of it.

Nicki and I both feeling the strain, decided on the spur of the moment to load all of the children into my van and head to the local park with a lake to feed the ducks. It turned out to be the best 2 hours of the entire week for me and helped put things into perspective.

We approached the lake and began feeding the ducks and our attention became fixed on a bird that was perched over the edge with it's sights fixed on the water. We began to look at the bird and wondered what it was doing. Was it hungry, was something wrong and why was it just siting there not moving staring into the water? Then we noticed the bird's leg. The leg was clearly not functional and the bird limped very noticeably on it. Now the kids were hooked, we must help this bird!

We began trying earnestly to feed the bird some of our bread, but it ignored us and stared straight at the water with singular intent. Then we saw the bird dive into the water and come up triumphantly with a fish in it's mouth. The kids of course screamed and yelled, but then the bird turned and looked at me and I swear I saw pride on that bird's face. No joke! It was like the bird looked at me and said "Look what I can do, yes I am injured, but even limping I am getting along just fine".

Later some zoo workers came by and told us that this bird was born with the malformed leg and that the zoo keepers keep an eye on him, but that the bird does remarkably well taking care of itself.

Now here is the take away for me. Pema Chodron a famous author and spiritualist has a quote that I feel sums this situation up well. "Rejoicing in ordinary things takes guts. Each time we drop our complaints and allow everyday good fortune to inspire us, we enter the warrior's world."

Yes, sometimes I do feel like I am limping along facing battle after battle, but with the proper mindset all of those experiences will help to form who I am and ultimately will shape who I choose to become.

Nicki and I sat down last night and viewed the final pictures John, our fab illustrator, had created for the book. Gasp! Hooray! It's done!

Now our book team moves into completing the design process. We are so very excited,  Rebekah Grace The Practically Perfect Princess is about to be launched for the world to see. We love her and know other Queen Mommies and their Princesses will too.

If you follow our blog, consider sharing it with your friends as we gear up for the final stretch before the book comes out. Be prepared for a Princess Palooza with fun and giveaways.

Tooth Fairy Fail

All right mommies, please help me out here. How many of you have accidentally forgotten to have the tooth fairy visit your child?

Now I would like to say this has happened to our family only once, but that would not be entirely true. Sometimes, no matter how hard I try to remember I just plain forget.

Flash back to last week, which was very busy, but our son lost a tooth which he had been working on for close to a month. The tooth had basically been holding on out of sheer stubbornness! Whether that be my son's stubbornness or the tooth's remains foggy. Well the tooth finally came out at school. I greeted this news with happiness and joy as now I would no longer have to worry about him choking on it in the middle of the night.

Now flash forward to 6:30 am. I hear my son in the bathroom and realize the tooth fairy had not yet visited him. ACK! I wake the husband up, tell him to delay our son in the bathroom and then make a mad dash for my wallet only to find there was not a single quarter or dollar to be found anywhere. All right move onto the husband's wallet where I find only a crisp 5 dollar bill in residence. That seems a bit much for the tooth fairy, but there is no way that am I going to see my son's belief in magic destroyed. All right, 5 bucks it is!

I mad dash back to my son's bedroom, with a minor skirmish involving some cars and a train set. Not to brag or anything, but the leap onto his bed was of Olympic proportions. I snatched the tooth, stuffed the money under the pillow and raced to my bathroom to hyper ventilate.

My son was very happy to discover that the tooth fairy had left him quite a hefty sum. He now tells me that perhaps working on a tooth that long earns you more money from the tooth fairy. Oh brother!

Other mommies please tell me that you too have almost forgotten the tooth fairy.

Yesterday we received a portion of the cover art for the book.
It is very cute, and in our excitement we wanted to share it with you!
This is a busy time for the design team right now. They are pulling together all of the visual elements and making sure that the book flows seamlessly from one page to the next. Every time they send Nicki and I a new portion we love the book even more. March is just around the corner and we are looking forward to sharing the entire finished project with each of you.

What Happens to a Princess When She Grows Up?

I was searching a message board this week and came across a discussion about little Princesses. One mother had decided that she was not going to allow her 4-year-old daughter to have any Princess playthings. Her belief was that Princesses are taught to wait to be rescued by their Prince Charming and are not taking responsibility for their own destiny.
I understood her thought process, but having raised a daughter who is now an adult, I saw my Princess become a fierce soccer player, and even get tossed out of a few games. She became an honors college student, yet has never disposed of the Princess lamp in her room. Her fellow Princess playmates who I have known since kindergarten have also gone on to seize their destinies. These Princesses are a budding accountant, a writer, a director of amazing plays, a computer guru, a fashionista, and one is currently applying to medical school.

I believe that Princess fairy tales taught these bright young ladies more than to wait for their Prince to rescue them. They learned about magic, faith, friendship and to never give up. I only hope as they continue to advance they will continue to believe they are Princesses who can work hard to obtain every dream they have. I am proud to know these Princesses.
